Broome community stops bulldozers at James Price Point

Woodside Petroleum has been delayed in their attempt to clear 25 hectares of Kimberley bush near James Price Point.

This morning the Broome Community no gas campaign stopped Woodside’s bulldozer and clearing equipment on the Manari Road. Currently a protester is locked onto the bulldozer just south of Quondong on the Manari Road preventing the Woodside clearing equipment advancing along the road to the proposed 25 hectare clearing site. The Broome community is calling on the Federal Minister for Environment to intervene and to stop the clearing until this project has the required approvals to go ahead.

“This is appalling behaviour by Woodside, they do not have State or Federal Government approval for the gas refinery project.
They are literally bulldozing the Kimberley, the Broome Community and the State and Federal Government process to select the site for gas refineries to process Browse Basin gas.” The Federal Government has ultimate responsibility for this.
The Broome community is calling on the Federal Minister for the Environment Tony Burke and Federal Minister for Industry Martin Ferguson to reign in Woodside and the State Government.
Protesters are concerned that the gas refineries will be the foot in the door to industrialise the Kimberley.

WA Premier Colin Barnett is on the record saying that he’d like the Kimberley to be the next Pilbara, expanding the heavily industrialised North West of Western Australia.
“The International Community need to know that the Western Australian Government is intent on destroying the Kimberley and that Woodside, BP, BHP, Shell and Chevron are part of this plan. This is at the time when the world is just beginning to understand the global, natural and cultural wonders of the Kimberley.”

Our friend Missy Higgins is playing a benefit in Melbourne which we’d like to help promote. Please note that JBT aren’t going to be at this event.

Missy Higgins & Friends – A Benefit To Help Protect The Kimberley

After touring the U.S. on the Lilith Festival and spending most of this year writing songs for a new album, Missy Higgins is returning home to Australia to perform an intimate benefit concert to help protect one of our country’s most stunning regions … the Kimberley.

On Sunday 16th of January Missy and her band will get up close and personal with just a few hundred music lovers at Trak Live Lounge Bar in Melbourne. She will be joined in this unique club environment by some surprise musical guests to help raise funds in support of ‘Environs Kimberley’.

Environs Kimberley is a small environment group based in Broome who have been fighting to protect the Kimberley for the past 15 years. The group successfully stopped a 200,000 hectare cotton proposal and the damming of the Fitzroy River in conjunction with the Traditional Owners of that area.
They now need Australia’s help to protect the Kimberley from large scale industrialization.

Executive Director of Environs Kimberley Martin Prichard stated, “the WA Government and multi-national oil and gas companies Woodside, Shell, BP, BHP and Chevron are planning to build gas refineries on the pristine Kimberley coast 40km north of Broome. The new industrial port that would need to be built would be in the middle of the Kimberley humpback whale calving grounds and thousands of oil and gas tanker movements would threaten their future”.

Missy has confirmed that ALL profits for this special one off benefit concert will go straight to ‘Environs Kimberley’ to assist them in their attempt to lobby governments for the long term preservation of this precious part of Australia.

Missy has a strong personal connection with the region. She has owned a small place in Broome for several years and many of the songs on her triple platinum selling album “On A Clear Night” were written there. She also played a role in the acclaimed movie “Bran Nue Dae” which was filmed in the Kimberley in 2008.

“The Kimberley region is one of the last true remaining wilderness’ on the planet, and any Australian who’s lucky enough to have visited this incredible part of our country knows how special it is. It would be a crime on so many levels to allow this mammoth industrialisation plan to go ahead. Not only would it be the biggest LNG processing plant in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s just one foot in the door as far as further industrialisation goes. Recently WA Premier Colin Barnett has begun compulsorily acquiring the land, stripping the Kimberley Traditional Owners of their Native Title rights. I find it hard to believe that this is even legal anymore and it completely undermines any progress we’ve made with reconciliation in recent years. The point is that there are alternatives to bringing the gas onshore at James Price Point, and I think it’s our responsibility to make sure that our leaders choose these alternatives over those, which are irreversibly damaging to the Kimberley Coast. It’s just too special to ruin forever.”

PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD AND COME TO SUPPORT THIS TRULY WORTHY CAUSE.

The Kimberley region of northern WA is one of the world’s great natural and Indigenous cultural regions. Its vast savannah landscapes, wild rivers, extensive wetlands, spectacular coast and rich marine environments provide a multitude of habitats that are home to an extraordinary diversity of species. Incredibly, the far north-west Kimberley sub-region is the only part of Western Australia, and one of very few in Australia, that appears to have retained its complete native fauna species diversity without extinction since European settlement.

It’s time to protect the Kimberley. By registering your support you will send a clear message to State and Commonwealth Government and multi-national fossil fuel companies such as Woodside, Shell, BHP, Chevron and BP that the Kimberley is not for sale! Take action »

Save The Kimberley is proud to be joining the John Butler Trio (JBT) for their Australian Tour beginning in Perth on the 29th August and culminating in the Kimberley (Broome) 27th September 2010.

Albert Wiggan on stage on the John Butler Trio Australian tour

John Butler is one of Australia’s most exciting and successful musicians and his music and actions have always had a strong social and environmental awareness message. Save The Kimberley will be providing information stalls at JBT’s Australian gigs and is on stage asking the question “What is the future for our Kimberley? Culture, Tourism and nature or heavy polluting industry?” and sharing our message of Environment Protection, Indigenous Tradition and Respect.

Albert Wiggan (pictured with John Butler) is a young Indigenous leader and family man who will be on stage telling his story and highlighting the importance of culture, including the song lines of his country, and the threat posed by proposed heavy Industry at James Price Point in the Kimberley – particularly in light of the WA Premier’s threat to compulsorily acquire land from the Indigenous Custodians to build a massive industrial facility. Elder and Cultural ‘law boss’ Joseph Roe will also be joining the tour for selected shows.
